Chapter 19 - Disappointed -

“Where’s Patricia?” Meliae asked. “Where’s the portal?”

“I don’t know,” Felix answered honestly. Gently disentangling himself from the Dryad, he moved over to the portal device.

Getting down on one knee, he pressed the activation button.

The machine powered up, circulated energy, and then activated.

Only for the portal to fizzle out before it was even constructed.

Trying again, Felix pressed the button. And got the exact same results. There was no change.

Reaching into a breast pocket, Felix fished out a metal card. Felicia had made it so he could get back to Legion from wherever he was. No matter the distance.

His brush with being teleported against his will had created some new security toys.

Rolling his thumb over the activation square, he waited.

And waited.

But nothing happened.

It simply didn’t work. It was as dead as the major portal device was. Felix frowned and pushed it back into his breast pocket.

“It would seem,” he said, thinking about the problem at hand, “that I’m trapped here, and your sister is… somewhere else.”

“It looked like she cast a spell as she went,” Meliae said, her voice sounding subdued and a bit guilty.

“Yes, it did seem as if she set off a spell on accident. It struck the portal, sent her elsewhere, and… broke it?” Felicity asked.

“I’m not sure it’s broken,” Felix said. “It powers on correctly, but shuts off when the portal starts to form. That’s never happened before.

“But it doesn’t feel like it’s broken, per se.”

“I’m so sorry, Felix. I don’t know what she did,” Meliae said.

Taking a moment to spare her a glance, he confirmed she didn’t look like she was going to fall apart, then looked back to the device.

“Don’t worry about it. I have Mr. White here on site. He can take a look and tell me if it’s a mechanical failure.

“Though I genuinely believe it isn’t. I think this is more about deities taking an opportunity,” Felix said.

Sighing, he got up and then checked on his point count.
